The Tramontana range is the main mountain range in the Balearic Islands. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO for its beauty and unique landscape. The mountain range is situated in the north east of the island of Mallorca and is named after the wind that blows from that direction. It is here that the three large reservoirs can be found: Cúber, Gorg Blau and the one used by the military base in Puig Major. One of the districts in Mallorca takes its name from the highest peak in the range, Puig Major, standing at a height of 1445 meters. GR221 is a trail that proposes you to discover dry stone landscapes in Serra de Tamuntana mountain range. You can visit fascinating historical ruins and exploer traditions, architecture, customs, gastronomy and handicarfts of tis privileged spot in Mallorca's geography.
The route often takes you close to the coast and in some points to the loftiest peaks of the range, the highest point on the route being the Coll de ses Cases de sa Neu pass at slightly over the thousand two hundred metres. This combination of coast and mountainous heights, coupled with the variety of vegetation, shady holm oak groves giving way to the typically Mediterranean scrub (garriga or maquis), help to enhance the scenic attraction of the path.

The Mola de s'Esclop is one of the best known routes loved by hikers. It is a long route with demanding steep slopes that puts even the most expert trekkers to the test. It is regarded as the sister mountain of the Puig de Galatzó, sharing as it does much of its magnetism and legends. At its peak we can find the geodesic apex that, together with the apex of the Mola de Formentera and the apex of Campvei in Ibiza, is part of the triangulation network used by Francois Aragó and other astronomers in their calculations of the Green Meridian and in the definition of the unit of the current Decimal Metric System.

The Puig de Galatzó Mountain is a well-known peak on the island of Mallorca and is probably the most popular summit over 1,000 metres. Galatzó has a rich natural heritage, where the forests of holm oaks, pine trees and garrigues stand out, as well as a variety of mountain vegetation and agricultural areas with olive trees, carob trees, almond trees and small allotments.

One of the most famous excursions in Mallorca is the tour of La Trapa. This circular outing takes us through a coastal area of the island whose landscape is regarded as being of extreme beauty. It also boasts stunning views over the island of Sa Dragonera. In addition, the former monastery of La Trapa is a must-see!

Banyalbufar is Estellencs’ nearest neighbour and that means it is a picturesque Majorcan village at the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range. Although the population of Banyalbufar is small, it receives visitors all year round because of its beautiful scenery and all its nooks and crannies just waiting to be explored. In Banyalbufar we can also find the fishing village of Es Port de Canonge, as well as several coves and beaches where we might like to sunbathe or take a refreshing dip in summer. Among these, well worth mentioning are; Cala Banyalbufar, Es Corral Fals and Son Bunyola (the Richard Branson estate).

The Sa Dragonera Nature Reserve is a unique natural and unspoilt enclave in the Balearic Islands. Here, we can enjoy nature, discover the local fauna and take in the incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. There is a boat which links Majorca with the island of La Dragonera and in high season there are sailings every 30 minutes.

Esporlas is one of the most noteworthy villages in the world of hiking and trail-running as it is here in this village that we can find the starting point for many routes and excursions through the Tramuntana mountain range. Many people say that Esporlas is one of the best kept secrets of Majorca. Without a shadow of a doubt, it is a wonderful place that combines traditional stone architecture with the stunning surroundings of the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana range. Just off the main street, there are many picturesque trails with traditional stone houses that boast spectacular views of the valley.

This beautiful part of Mallorca is home to a large percentage of the island’s foreign residents, approximately a quarter of the population. Many well-known people such as Claudia Schiffer or Fernando Trueba are among these. Port d’Andratx is worth a visit if only to admire the luxury yachts and magnificent sail boats.

There is a train from Sóller to Palma de Mallorca with stops along the way in Son Sardinia and Buñola. It is an electric train which, from the beginning of the 20th century, has followed the same route and has been beautifully conserved and maintained (the engine, carriages, tracks), There is also a tram which runs from Sóller town to the port.

The main attraction of this village with its steep, narrow streets is the Valldemossa Charterhouse where in the winter of 1838 – 39, George Sand and Chopin spent a romantic getaway. It was here Chopin composed his “Preludes Op.28” and Sands wrote “A winter in Mallorca”. Many other famous people have spent time at the charterhouse, like Ruben Dario, Jorge Luis Borges, Jovellanos, Santiago Rusiñol to name but a few. Nowadays many renowned painters reside in Valldemossa.

Planissi is a protected natural area in Majorca. The estate is outstanding for several reasons, not least because it is the nesting ground of the peregrine falcon and the booted eagle. It is also famed due to the abundance of springs, such as the Font de sa Menta, which is one of the most important in Banyalbufar.
